So I come into work today, late for a meeting (shit) and walk into our president resigning (yeah right)
So the consensus around the office is "didn't see that coming" and "Jesus, I hope that's if for the fucking layoffs". So far my position seems reasonably secure, but it's time to get really busy. Going out tomorrow night with the outgoing CFO, who is retiring under duress. He normally goes out for drinks and singing/piano at least one night a week and if I don't go this week, I won't ever get the chance.
I personally am still a little stunned. I have to think he's a little blindsided also.
tonight might be a good night to go home and work on the Jeep and just hide out. Maybe I'll watch tv or work on my study guide. I need to really focus over the next couple of weeks and knock some stuff out.
Updates later.

Sometimes
Sometimes I just have random thoughts....like this morning
My grandfather was a pretty well respected banker back in Louisiana. He died several years ago, but for some reason the thought popped into my head this morning "I wonder what he would have thought about all the banks and the bailout money?" I mean he was a banker back when you were expected to have a down payment for your home, plus money to cover closing costs. I wonder what he would have thought of the no money down, choose your payment crap that was being sold? I'll have to do some research and see if anyone has dug up a crusty old banker and got his thoughts on all this bullshit goings on......
Couple more thoughts for everyone based on some e-mails between my sister and I....
I have a couple of oddball thoughts on the bank execs thing, as I am known to do occasionally.
First, we put the bank execs on the train and take them on tour. We call it "art" perhaps by smearing them with the leftover tomatoes, or paint or something. Then we get a NEA endowment for it and tour for free…….we could call it "banks in bondage or something cool like that. We could get millions
Second, we form a band to go with the bank execs, perhaps calling it the "traveling banks in stocks", with a nod to the traveling wilburys. Then while the execs are on display, we play a gig, perhaps turning it into a festival and charging admission.
All of the above is an outflow of our original ideas. Mine was an economic stimulus plan that supported the economy by buying $750B worth of plate lunches. If you aren't sure what that is, look up Dwyers in Lafayette, LA to see. My sisters was that we take the heads of all the banks that have received bailout money, or gone broke, put them in stockades and pelt them with rotten fruit and vegetables. She was planning on using crawfish heads (very stinky) and I was considering using either fish heads or dog poop.

I F-ing Swear
I f-ing swear to God, maybe we really should just burn the whole motherfucker down and play a fiddle while it burns. By that I mean our credit system along with banking, insurance and whatever else I can think of. I'm really tired of reading about how the banking/credit markets have to be saved by investing billions (trillions!!??) of my freaking dollars with these assholes. I think we should be clear about one thing......I don't want to do this and I don't want to get any deeper into this than we absolutely have to. Face it....they (banks et al) had no business doing what they were doing, and if they can't handle the repercussions of being stupid, then they should drop on the floor and die quietly. You think that anyone is going to bail my job out if a cut comes down because my employer did something moronically stupid? Seriously, just using the SW FL markets as an example....who really thought that a small, CBS construction house east of I-75 on a cookie cutter lot was really worth $500,000?????????
Okay, onto an equally enraging topic, but one that is only possibly related to the economy in a peripheral manner.....some asshole got into my car the other night and swiped my wifes birthday/Valentines day present. My message for this person is "If I find you, I'm putting my size 12 so far up your ass, it will have to be removed surgically!!"

Black Thursday is past us
Well, the layoff day (Black Thursday) is past us. It was at least as painful as I expected, especially since a couple of people were added to my list at the last minute. I'm working on letters of recommendation for everyone tody, so that at least makes me feel a tiny bit better. Still trying to save some money, which isn't going as well as I would have hoped. We at least received the title to my honey's car this week, so we are down to one car note. The refinance of the casa is in the works, pending receipt of the appraisal which as we all know is a scary S.O.B. these days. That is especially true here in S.W. Fl!!
It's funny how sometimes I write something on here and then it gets said back to me by a family member within 24 hours. It's funny because they don't know about this, so it is very unlikely they are reading these comments. Hell it's unlikely ANYBODY is reading this......anyway in my last post I mentioned "hunkering down" and riding out the housing/job etc. market by staying here. Friday night, my honey said essentially the same thing about how she would love to get closer to our family, but thought we were stuck here for a couple of years at minimum.
Started feeling well enough to exercise again this weekend. Ran a mile or so, plus walked about 1.5 miles Sunday, then walked about 2.5 mi again this morning. I just found a 5K near the house that is being run in about a month, so I'm going to try and run in it and beat my last time of 31:23.
Worked on the jeep a little yesterday. Got some more dash lights working and started trying to wire some of the individual grounds for the dash lights and gauges. Got a lot to do, but I think the focus needs to be getting under the hood and finishing running the wires for the headlights, now that we have power to the wiring. Also need to get the marker/turn lights installed and wired. At least those are already drilled and ready. Then I need to decide whether or not I'm going to install the turn signals in the grill, or just leave it empty and pretend like they never existed. While I'm under the hood, I can install the temp sensor and try to drill out the broken off bolt in the exhaust pipe. Then we can move on to all the rest of the problems.

The Black Plague
It seems that the office and now my home are overrun with the black plague. Not actually the midieval plague that removed roughly 40% of the population from the face of the earth, but a nasty cold/flu virus that gets around like wildfire in a high wind.
What else is going on? Well, we're in the midst of layoffs at work. Sucks to do it, although obviously it sucks worse to be on the receiving end. I have no idea how much in the way of jobs there are out there here in SW FL. I really don't think there's a lot....I'm going to do what I can for everyone, hooking them up with the few recruiters I know in the area, trying to give them a head start on unemployment benefits and giving out letters of reference. Not really sure what I can do past that. Eventually, I won't have much of an accounting dept, we'll be doing more business support activities and analysis.
Lots more job cuts this week, the recession (borderline depression) is getting really rolling. Macy's, panasonic, Dow.....you name the big company and they are pretty much all cutting people. If my honey wasn't so sick, I'm seriously considering telling her we need to change our plan and just hunker down for 1 - 3 years here.....long enough for things to turn around, or at least bottom out. Part of my problem with moving is the lack of visibility. Where are we going in this economy? When will the bad/awful/apocalyptic news start to taper off and a ray of sunshine pop up?
On the slightly more entertaining things, today is national signing day for football! It appears that my beloved Tigers are going to have a GREAT class, possibly #1 in the county. I realize that it doesn't really matter, and there isn't much difference in the top 5 overall, but it would be nice to be #1 just to piss off the Alabama fans (AkA fucking stupid Gumps)
Not much happening on the job front...this part of the post is ignoring what I posted above about hunkering down by the way.....I had the phone interview in Alex, I think it went pretty well, but have not heard anything back yet. I've been submitted for a position in Pascagoula, but have no idea if there is any interest or not.
